Gesher....

This morning was my first Eidah meeting for the second session group of 7th and 8th graders coming to camp. I am already frustrated because most of the CIT’s assigned to our age group did not want to learn the song. As a songleader they should respect me and listen to my authority but instead they talk to the counselors and hang out with one another. I’m already frustrated with our group and the kids haven’t even gotten here yet.
I’m really excited about my CO-Counselors though. Jen and Meredith will be amazing. Jen and I were co’s last session, so having her again is really nice because she knows my schedule and how I’m never there. Only because I have so much work to do songleading wise. It’s hard to balance both being a counselor and songleader. This thankfully will be my last session to have to balance them. I hope my kids will be as good as the last set. I’m sure they will be. Our age group is HUGE. There’s 75 of them coming. It’s kind of ridiculous. But I’m pretty stoked for it.
Songleading for them is always a very hard challenge, but I have more experience then the last time so that will be helpful. I hope they like our session song. It’s to the Beatles song I want to hold your hand. Have a good day.

Inter-session!

The kids are gone, well not all of them but most of them.

This has to have been one of the fastest sessions I have ever gone through, but it was only 11 days so honestly it couldn't of been too slow.

I adore my girls, it's going to be hard without them because I still feel like they just got there. I remember on opening day of camp I was wild and crazy and they all were kind of scared, but they defintly came together to have one community. During the year you forget about the communities you can make at camp. The fact that I helped form those 12 girls to become one cabin amazes me everytime. Last night during closing circle and havdallah tears were on so many kids faces, it was beautiful truely. It reminded me of my bogrim summer...haha stam I was never in bogrim! But it did remind me of my camp summer of 2003. That was the summer I knew I would go to camp forever. One of the best summers of my life.

For intersession I decided not to leave because I didn't want to spend any money. I'm here just hanging out and sleeping. Watching movies just trying to relax and revamp myself for the next group of kids coming in. I'm pretty sure I have Gesher the 7th and 8th graders. I'm excited for my new campers. I have even started writing their session song and I'm almost done. It's to the tune of I wanna hold your hand by the beatles. My last session song was Boom Boom Boom by the Venga Boys.

I can't wait to sleep a lot and in tomorrow, new kids soon. Everything is going well and I'm learning how to really chill out in CA.

Shalommm

Jewish rock stars!

Tonight is the DAN NICHOLS concert, and I couldn't be more excited. Being filled by the excitment in the camp also helps my excitment since I'm pretty much always excited.

Last night was my session's camp out. Every session has a camp out where they hike about an hour and half mile long up hill hike with two crazy Israelis and go to this GOREGOUS camp group near camp. And of course you sleep in tents, have the fire, the sleeping bag, the flashlight, the whole nine yards. I had to get driven to the campsite since I had to songlead for the sessions and come late.

The song session we did last night was AWESOME. It was what songleaders like to call an A minor run. And I adore A minor runs. We played Gesher Am Yisrael Chai, David Melech, Od Yishama, Haleilu, Gesher, and Jeremy Gimbel's Eitz Chayim which went really well too. I am so glad I got to stay back and songlead that shira because everyone was really into it. It was one of the better ones of this session. I had a lot of fun leading it and this awesome songleader from Avodah helped us too. She's a bit younger than me, but I can tell she's becoming an awesome songleader.

At the camp out I drove with one of the Israeli's who was crazy! But all the Israelis at camp are really nice and friendly. He had us play some fun mixers and then I lead siyum. My kids can never seem to understand NO SCHTICK or extra things in a song. It's probably because they are at the age where authority about things like that just doesn't effect them. But it's not too big of a deal. We went to sleep in tents and well sleeping is really not what I did. Call me a princess, but I just can't sleep on the ground of any sorts unless its all cushy. Maybe if I get use to it I could, but for now I love my mattress at camp.

We got back today and it was YOM SPORTS! Basiclly it was Color Wars. My cabin was part of the blue team. It was actually tons of fun. I wish I could of been a captian, but I was so excited that two of my really good friends were captians. Jared was the captian of the blue team, and Jen one of my CO's was the captian of the Green team. I'm pretty sure the Blue team won. I was of course decked out in blue and tied my Israeli flag around myself. Then we stuck my flag on a hockey stick and wove it around. It was really fun just dancing around being crazy. Even though I have been exhausted from the lack of sleep, I still found some kind of energy inside of me to be crazy at Yom Sports. I also had blue paint all over my legs and face.

After Yom Sports I helped out Jeremy and some others set up for the DAN NICHOLS concert tonight, which I'm pretty stoked about. I'm not sure if the songleaders are going to go up there for a song, but I totally hope so. We haven't gone over anything yet. Dan is playing a bunch of stuff from his new album which should be awesome. I am pretty excited for that.

Ani cham m'od.

Since I am always so hot, I bought a fan at Target on my block off last Saturday. It's black and fantastic. My kids love it too.

My kids are awesome. We did this really touching women's program the other night about how we have powerful women in our lives because the boys were at a camp out. We all got into our PJ's and had pillows in the BK [which is just a big space with air conditioning]. It was really touching and moving. I really enjoyed it and the girls took it seriously and got into it which was really nice.

Lately, things have been crazy and stressful, but overall I am loving it. I am not nearly as overwhelmed as I was before, but that's probably because it's not Shabbat, aka the SONGLEADER SUPERBOWLLLLLL. It's true, any URJ Camp songleader can tell you that Shabbat is so not a time for rest, but the time for music, music, shira, music, services, music, and everything else in between.

Songleading has been awesome, DAN IS HERE! Which is also awesome. Today I got to spend most of my day with Dan and the songleaders talking about techniques and whats good and whats not. And then Dan taught me one of his new songs which awesome. Everything is pretty awesome so far. I love camp.

Shalom!

The kids are here...

Tired is an understatement of the life of a camp counselor/songleader.

Exhausted would be a better way to explain the feelings I'm currently having.

I am LOVING every mintue of it though. Stressful, yet fantastic once I'm in it. I adore my girls, each and every one of them are different but awesome. They are all so sweet and nice. Most of them are going into 8th grade.

Songleading is awesome. The opening night song session was tonight and it was one of the best songleading highs I've ever had. Songleading for around 500 kids and 100 staff members is the most amazing feeling ever. I can't actually get over it. The high, the guitars, the voices, amazing. Jeremy and I were totally rocking out and dancing, it was awesome. I forgot how great song sessions can be. I'm lovin it.

All the staff in my eidah [unit of kids] are the best. I have some of my closet friends and my CO's are great too. This is going to be a fantastic session. It's only 11 days, which seems short, but long at the same time. Its so great.

Today during our Chugim presentations I stuck my face in the cut out of my gutiar and starting to rock back and forth. Then Ben, one of the songleaders, came up to me and showed me how to play guitar correctly. That was our chugim commerical/skit thing. it was somewhat funny. Gertz got his kids to chant out quack quack quack since he calls me Duck. It was fantastic.

Life is good, stressful, a bit tiring, but I adore it so far. I am LOVING being a camp counselor.

sunday/todayish

Oh the weather outside is BEAUTIFUL and the bugs are not delightful, but camp is fantastic so far.

Yesterday was a very programming filled day.

In the morning we went to a three rotational program about what we want to do for the camp, gender issues, and how to deal with kids at all the different ages. Then we went to another program and talked about what type of people we were when we were younger and what ways we learn different things and figured out what we can do to help them. They weren't very exciting programs. Everyone was very tired.

For services, we had this "art" service where the songleaders were playing softly behind the Rosh T'Fillah who was saying some of the prayers in Hebrew and English. Everyone got a piece of paper and drew a picture of whatever they wanted. It was really nice and peaceful. The service went pretty well.

Then since we had a day filled with programming we had a pool party to finish it off. Everyone took their swim tests and im pretty sure everyone passed. It was one of the easiet swim tests I had ever taken, but I passed and thats all that matters. There is also this really awesome huge water slide which looks like so much fun to go down.

After that we had siyum and then a bunch of us went to go and hang with the Israelis at the motel. It was pretty good.

Today i've just been doing a bunch of songleading stuff and that seems to be the plan today. I have the bogrim age group which are the 7th and 8th graders, so I'm pretty stoked.

Have a good day shalom!

STAFF WEEK! the start.

Okay so these were written this morning and yesterday, so enjoy!

I would be updating my blog right now, but in the cabins there isn’t any wi-fi. I am LOVING the URJ Camp Newman. Literally, its amazing and it’s only been two days. Tomorrow we are going out and hanging out all day in the bay area! I am so excited. Okay, so after all of my crazy plane rides and adventures, I got here in one piece even if my bag did break. I couldn’t really sleep all that much on the plane rides and on the bus to camp. So by the end of the first day I hadn’t slept in over 24 hours, which was very exhausting to say the least. I felt like I was on one of those medical shows being an intern working a 48 hour shift or something of that type thing. But let me tell you, those 24 hours have been fantastic. I got to camp and Aaron Gertz (one of my madrachim from EIE) was SO excited to see me! I couldn’t believe how excited he was because he’s so sarcastic and not excited about anything ever. So it was pretty exciting. All the Newman staff heads were wearing these obnoxious yellow polo shirts that say Camp Newman on them. I loved it. I met these two girls from Wisconsin at the airport. They are really nice and friendly like the typical Jewish kids. The first day overall was very overwhelming. I met the songleaders Jeremy Gimbel and Rachel Mylan. I am one of six Rachel’s on staff. It’s Rachel land. Aaron calls me B.Duck (it’s a nickname from EIE) and its starting to catch on a little bit. I got to play some opening songs with Jeremy and Rachel on Thursday which went pretty well. We played Heivenu, and some other good classics. We did a bunch of mixers and getting to know you games to welcome all the new staff members and madrachim. Plus we have a TON of fantastic Israelis. They all are so much fun and crazy. I love it. It’s nice to hear the bad English and Israeli accents. It feels like home again. J We got a tour of the camp which was nice and had dinner and whatnot. I met a bunch of Newman alumni a lot of CITs of 2007 which is my age group. All the people here are so nice. I’ve already fallen in love with this camp. It’s beautiful out here in wine country, my goodness I am digging it. After all of the mixers and programs and what not we got to go to our cabins. Basically we can just sleep where ever we want. It’s really nice to be able to pick your own cabins. I am with most of CIT girls and Jen who went to Kutz with me. We got super hyphy last night which was crazy fun. We did out thizzle faces and passed the thizz. It was fantastic, I was so pumped to get hyphy! Today has been so hectic. So Jeremy Gimbel, the head songleader, had to leave early today because he had to go to his college graduation. Tonight was Shabbat and the first one for us. Rachel Mylan, Brad, Lara, and I lead services. They went pretty well, there were some mistakes and issues but overall they went pretty well. It was nice to songlead at a camp. It was a bit different from songleading in NFTY, but I really enjoyed myself. Then we had Shabbas dinner. We had to rush to get ready for the Shabbat Shira. It was intense planning all day today for shira and services . The songleading office is also fantastic. Since Jeremy is gone, I am the assistant songleader, which is pretty rockin. Songleading at Newman so far has been awesome, but I’ve never been so tired. I am drinking SO MUCH water. I’ve filled my camel back at least 8 times today. From all the singing and hill climbing, mayim is needed. I am exhausted from all this crazyness, but I am having an amazing time. I am loving every moment. I am making some great friends. That’s about it. Hope your Shabbat goes well!

_______________________________________________

Yesterday was my first Shabbat at Newman. It was fantastic. Okay, let’ me take it from the top.
I first started off by leading Shabbat Shacharit services with Jake the Rosh T’Fillah. [I think that’s his name] which went pretty well. I was the only songleader which was kind of neat because I got to songlead by myself for the first time. I can’t believe how much songleading I am doing here already. I’ve lead every service and ever song session so far…it’s crazy how much songleading I’ll probably being doing by the end of the summer. PLUS Newman sings so much, its ridiculous, but I LOVE it. Services went really yesterday morning. My fingers are dying, but that’s only because I am not in songleader shape. It will happen soon though. Then we had a day off because some rich family rented out the camp. I went in Aimee’s car with her, Jen, and Morgana. She drives the cutest sky blue bug. I love it, we had the top down. We were so high school. We first went to Ross to go shopping for white dresses. In past years at Newman the whole, wearing white on Shabbat rule was never enforced, but this year Ari Vared [the asst. director] said that it’s going to be enforced strictly. All the girls in my group and Jared went to Ross to go find some white dresses. I was helping out by finding stuff and whatnot .There are some really cute ones that we found. After we went to Ross the Newman staff took us out to lunch at the In and out burger which is world famous. I’ve definitely heard about it on the Food Network. It was cool to have my first In and Out burger. It was crazy packed and filled with all kinds of people. It was really good and very fresh. They call it the “healthy junky food” which might be a tad ironic. After we had lunch we went to Target to shop for some more clothing and cute stuff. Target wasn’t too long of a trip. Then it was getting later, so we went down to downtown Santa Rosa which was really nice. Aaron Sulia showed us around because he knows the area really well. There was an old car show going on so all these hot old cars were driving everywhere. It was really neat. We walked around a bit, and then went to this place to play some pool. We didn’t actually play pool we ended up meeting up with some Israeli staff members and just hung out for a while. Then we left to go to this AMAZING restaurant called Flavor. Aaron said it was one of the best in Santa Rosa. I had gnocchi which was the best I’ve ever had. After our fantastic dinner we headed around and ended up in the mall. There was a Brookstone in there with all different types of massage chairs which was really fun. There was this thing called the “iSqueeze” which focused on your calf muscles, and it was amazing. It felt lovely. After that, we met up with everyone hung around the mall for a while. Took some pictures on the Mac’s in the Apple Store. The apple store there was really tiny. There was not that much space. Then we all decided to leave and go back to camp before it got too late. When we got back I got to help lead Havdallah. Then everyone watched Finding Nemo. It was a really awesome day to have so much time off. We were off from 11am-9pm. Which never really happens at a camp, but we had to leave for the Bat Mitzvah. It’s actually really cold here, which is weird, but overall I am having an amazing time and loving every moment of it!
